Accessibility

GRTC Transit System is easier to ride than ever. We're proud to have one of the newest fleets in the transit industry. The average age of the GRTC fleet is less than 6 years. We use this benefit to our advantage, redesigning and upgrading our fixed-route buses to consistently advance accessibility for our passengers. With over 12 million trips under our belt each year, we've got industry design down to a science.
100% Wheelchair FriendlyChair lift
The entire GRTC Transit System fleet is equipped with wheelchair lifts. Bus operators can provide help to the elderly and disabled customers who need extra assistance on our fixed-route services.
Low-Floor Buses
GRTC ultra low-floor “kneeling” buses are designed to accommodate senior and disabled persons riding our fixed routes. Thirty-one low-floor buses are currently servicing the metropolitan region.

The entire bus floor is engineered to be lower, eliminating any steps when boarding. Sophisticated hydraulics allows the operator to bring the entire bus down to the curb for easy walk-on access or ramp extension for wheelchair entry. Wide doors and a generous front aisle width clear the way for easy transportation.
Reduced-Fare Program
GRTC offers a Reduced-Fare Program that allows for the elderly (65 or older) and the disabled to ride for a reduced fare of 75-cents at all times (reduced fare is not available on the Express Routes, or the 19 Pemberton). The fare can be paid in cash or by using a Go Card. A Medicare or GRTC Photo ID Card must be shown to the bus operator to ride for a reduced fare.

For more information about the GRTC Reduced Fare Program, please call (804) 358-GRTC.

Please visit our CARE section for information about GRTC’s specialized transportation services for the elderly and disabled.
Bicycle Racks
To make transit convenient for bicyclists, GRTC Transit System, in partnership with its RideFinders division, has made it easier than ever to ride the bus and ride your bike, all at the same time! All GRTC buses are equipped with front-mounted bicycle racks so cyclists can load their bicycle onto a bus and catch a ride. The racks are easy to use and can accommodate a wide array of bike styles, from a child’s version to a fully loaded adult-size bike. This service is provided free of charge to all riders.
