The Basics


Our Background
GRTC Transit System is non-profit and jointly owned
by the City of Richmond and Chesterfield County. Our services were incorporated on April 12, 1973, for the purpose of providing public transportation service in the Greater Richmond area. Today we’re considered one of the most efficient transit systems in the United States.
GRTC Transit System operates under the direction of its Chief Executive Officer, Eldridge F. Coles, and Chief Operating Officer, Charles E. Mitchell.

The GRTC Transit System Board of Directors consists of six members – three appointed by the City Council of Richmond and three by the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors. The GRTC Board of Directors Members are as follows:

The Board of Directors meets at 8:00 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at GRTC Corporate Headquarters.

Our Services
GRTC Transit System provides fixed bus service and specialized services such as CARE, C-VAN, and RideFinders.

A fleet of 186 GRTC buses traveling over 40 separate routes within the City of Richmond and Henrico County. All fixed-route buses are equipped with wheel-chair lifts.

A non-profit organization that supports a fleet of vanpools, and provides free carpool and vanpool ride-matching services for clients, assists in the support and formation of vanpools, surveys employment sites to determine and market commuter needs, promotes transportation demand strategies through the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), provides the Emergency Ride Home Program to all registered commuters, and launches the annual Clean Air Campaign.
RideFinders

Specialized Transportation Services

A fleet of 46 vehicles with seating capacities for 8-12 persons, providing curb-to-curb paratransit service for physically and mentally disabled persons who are unable to use regular fixed-route transit service. All vehicles are equipped with wheelchair lifts.

CARE
A fleet of 17 vans with seating capacities for 8-12 persons, providing door-to-door transportation service that connects Virginia Initiative for Employment Not Welfare (VIEW) recipients to jobs and daycare facilities.
