GRTC is currently in an historic period of change and transit growth. As the need for mechanics grows with more service, GRTC is leaping into the area of workforce development. This month, GRTC launches the “GRTC Apprenticeship Program,” a paid, on-the-job training program that will develop certified journey-level mechanics and ensure GRTC maintains an adequate staff of highly qualified mechanics.
GRTC’s CEO David Green says, “GRTC is committed to promoting the personal and professional growth of our employees and investing in our community. This pilot Apprenticeship Program will welcome new talent to our workforce and cultivate skills for the future.”
After an apprentice completes the 6,000-hour / 36-month training schedule in a variety of journey-level mechanic disciplines, GRTC aims to retain and hire apprentices as full-time employees. Both external and internal candidates are eligible for the Apprenticeship Program. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment as an apprentice mechanic and must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
