On June 30, GRTC will extend Route 1 3.5 miles, from Wilmer & Chamberlayne to Reynolds Community College / Parham Rd. The extension includes 16 new stop locations along 7 total miles of service. It is the first of two planned extensions for the 1 this year: in October, the bus will be extended again, serving Virginia Center Commons.
Service will continue to operate every 15 minutes along the existing Route 1, and every other bus will continue north to serve the extension, providing 30-minute arterial service along one of the region's most traveled corridors.
The Route 1 extension corresponds with the phase two study work for GRTC's future North/South Pulse, which will follow the existing Route 1 on its northern alignment and once built will provide high-frequency and high-capacity rapid transit service to Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield County - and the success of the extended Route 1 will provide both a compelling case for federal funding of future improvements as well as high quality existing service.
