GRTC Grieves Loss of Employee to COVID-19
Case #41 died from complications caused by the virus on January 9.

RICHMOND, Va. (January 11, 2021) – GRTC was notified Sunday of the death of a GRTC employee who died from complications caused by the COVID-19 virus. Case #41, the 38th GRTC employee to test positive, had non-public facing job duties and was last at GRTC on December 10, 2020. Case #41 tested positive for the virus on December 17. They were admitted to a local hospital on December 22 and died on January 9, 2021.

GRTC Chief Executive Officer Julie Timm says, “Sunday morning, I heard the heartbreaking news that one of our non-public facing employees passed Saturday night. Out of respect for and at the request of the family, GRTC is not releasing any further information about Case #41. I am so deeply saddened by this loss to their family and to all of us at GRTC and so deeply weary in my soul of the ongoing toll this disease is taking on all of us and all of our families and friends. This is our second loss of a GRTC employee to complications from the COVID-19 virus. I pray this is our last.”

Free counseling is available to all GRTC employees and their families through GRTC’s Employee Assistance Program.

Public transit employees are expected to begin receiving the vaccine soon as part of Group 1B, and GRTC is already coordinating with the Health Department on timing and logistics for vaccine deployment to its workforce.
